Cotton Growing in Hongkong.

We thank you for your communication and

the accompanying sample of Cotton grown in the New Territory, which has been submitted to our Mill Manager, who reports as follows:-

"I beg to state that I have examined the sample of seed cotton grown in the New Territory, and find it to contain a small quantity of decayed pods but not excessive.

"the colour is a good white, and of

medium staple, but a little irreguiar; possibly a portion of the seed may have got mixed before being planted.

"1 should consider its present market value, after being carefully ginned, to be about $28.50 per

picul."

As a matter of interest we shall be oblig

-ed if you will favour us with a copy of the statistics of

yield per acre, etc., and let us know whether there is any likelihood of the farmers in the New Territory taxing up the

cultivation of cotton.

We have etc.,

S. P. Dunn, Esq.,

Superintendent,

Botanical and Afforestation Department.
